What a Man's Got to Do by Kortpeel ___________________________________________________________________ I was looking forward to Meg's return. She'd been gone for six days, seconded to another branch of the retail chain for which she worked. In the year since we got married this was the first time we'd been apart so we had some catching up to do. I'd made sure the house was decent and went to meet her at the station. I saw my beautiful 22 year old wife walking along the platform toward me, struggling a little with her suitcase. She is tallish with a lovely curvy figure, auburn hair and blue grey eyes. I expected a warm hug and kiss but she was strangely subdued. "What's up Meg? Are you feeling unwell?" "Tell you in the car." We pulled out of the station car park. "There's no good way to tell you this so I'll just tell you." She spoke in a cold flat voice looking straight ahead, I looked at her. "I've been unfaithful to you. I've been to bed with another man" Then she burst into tears. She kept saying she was sorry all the way home. It turned out that she'd been seduced by Roger Upway, the company's whiz kid. He was Director of Operations at 29. A smooth, handsome, charming man he had something of a reputation as a philanderer with the women at the branches, even though he was married and had two children. Upway often spent time at a branch when there was a secondment. He went in for team building and staff motivation. On the last night of Meg's secondment he had done the decent boss thing and treated the girls at the branch to a slap up meal at a good restaurant. Afterwards he'd driven them home. He was staying at the same hotel as Meg and since he'd had to remain sober to drive it was reasonable to ask her to have a drink with him when they got back to the hotel. She did and one thing led to another. Meg was genuinely distraught at what she'd done. I tried to reassure her. "Don't worry Meg. We'll get through this period together. Give it time and we'll get over it. You'll see." Except that we didn't get over it. We stayed and lived together but Meg's seduction had killed the libido in both of us. I was fond of her. I even felt sorry for her but I just couldn't fancy her any more. Six months later we still hadn't made love. "Mrs. Muffet's going on holiday next week. I'm to be manageress while she's away and we're getting a girl on secondment from the Timport branch." Meg said this as though there was some special significance for me in her news. "That's nice Meg." "Don't you see? It means Mr. Upway will come to our branch." "Well, it's probably the girl from Timport he'll be after." "How can I face him?" I gave her a hug. She'd got herself into a state over this. "He'll probably have forgotten all about it by this time. Just treat him with the friendly respect due to a director of the company and pretend it didn't happen. He's not going to bring up the past so make sure you don't." Meg did her best but having Upway around was making her a nervous wreck. He of course was his usual courteous charming self and didn't have a care in the world. The smarmy bastard had got a new Bentley in British racing green and he wanted to take all the girls in the store for a ride in it so he could show off his new toy. Poor Meg couldn't get out of it. She'd had to go too. On the Friday night Upway was taking all six girls from the branch out to supper. Normally Meg would have enjoyed such an occasion but this was going to be an ordeal for her. "Just go along and enjoy it, Meg. You're not the target for tonight." She gave me a funny look and went off to her dinner engagement. I gave her a half-hour start and followed. I knew the supper was to be at a roadhouse on the main road to Wellbury. At least Upway wasn't cheap. It was a good eating place. On the pretext that my car was giving trouble I'd borrowed one of the company's pick-ups for the weekend. The heater didn't work but there was an old scruffy anorak on the seat which I put on over my tee shirt. That and the jeans I was wearing made me look like some sort of workman and it gave me the invisibility which I needed that evening. I pulled into the roadhouse car park and parked as far as I could from the green Bentley. It was surprisingly empty for a Friday night. I put it down to the cold weather keeping people indoors. Through the windows I could see Upway's group standing in the bar and Upway being charming. I noticed with mixed feelings that Meg seemed to be enjoying herself. It was darn cold in that pick-up and I was shivering. I put on the golfing cap with its pom-pom that someone had left there. I saw a waiter come and speak to Upway. Presumably the table was ready. I watched, waited and shivered. They took nearly three hours over that meal. Upway was stinting them nothing. Booze flowed down the throats of those girls like it was lemonade. I noticed that Upway stayed with mineral water. At last I saw him say something and stand up. He left the table and walked out of the dining room. This was the moment I'd been waiting for. I left the pick-up and walked into the roadhouse through a side door, straight to the men's washroom. There was Upway taking a leak at one of a bank of urinals. No one else was there. I don't know what I'd have done if there had been. As is the custom at urinals Upway completely ignored me. I walked as if to pass him and just as I drew level I jabbed the hypodermic into his butt and pressed the plunger as hard as I could. "What the -" Still pissing Upway whipped round. I pretended to carry on past him. "Here! What do think …" He never finished. He collapsed to the ground. I dragged him into a stall. Hell but he was heavy. Got his pants down and got him seated like he was having a shit. I had the pliers in my pocket. I'd never touched another man's genitals and doing so now was uncomfortable. I put the pliers at the top of his scrotum, made sure I had the testicular cord in the jaws and squeezed. I could feel the cord crush as I did so. I timed 60 seconds and repeated it for the other side. Then I left him there. I had to wash my hands before I left. I was trembling on that drive home and wondering if I'd get away with it. No one saw me. If anyone did connect the workman with the assault on Upway they'd remember a guy in a cloth cap and anorak. There were no fingerprints. The anonymous pick-up wouldn't rate a second glance. I had the feeling that Upway wouldn't say too much either. It would make him look a fool and that would be the one thing he couldn't take. I didn't know whether I'd done too much or too little damage to Upway. Time would tell. I put the anorak and cap into a rubbish bag for later disposal and watched tv until Meg got in. It was gone one o' clock when she arrived. She was worried about being so late but my welcome reassured her. She told me about her evening. Apparently Upway had been fine all evening but "something he ate must have disagreed with him. He went to the bathroom, was there for ages and looked quite ill when he got back." "Ah. Do you think the girl from Timport will cure him?" "I don't think so. He didn't seem up to it." I don't think he ever was up to it again. He resigned shortly afterwards. Later we read in the paper that his wife was divorcing him. I'm delighted to say that soon after that night Meg and I got the old sparkle back into our marriage. We're expecting our first child next October. End
