Re: Gelding

Just bought a new ponyboy for my daughter– a lovely creature. I don’t mind her new hobby but I have no experience with stud colts. He is such a handful and we’re thinking of gelding him. He’s 21 years old and seems to have an eye for the ladies already. What method is best and when? My friend Nicole recommends that we wait until he’s broken and trained so that he’ll have a more masculine configuration. If we act too soon, she warns, he’ll be fine and slender like a girl! Is she right? My slut sister Michelle wants me to wait a while so she can jump his bones. Also, summer is here and others have suggested that I wait for colder weather because of swelling and flies. Please advise. Thanks in advance.

You can geld him any time after his testicles drop into his scrotum. Personally, I once gelded a boy two minutes after buying him. I kept another for 4 years. I like to wait until he has his full male secondary characteristics. Others prefer to castrate them sooner to avoid those studdy behaviors.

Visit any stable and you’ll find that most of the ponyboys are geldings. Intact males are short tempered, lazy and prone to violence. A gelded male is a delight. I gelded my Jim Dandy and he hardly knew what happened to him. He shed those emerging bad behaviors quickly and he was back to his sweet old self in days. Castrated males are simply more docile, and obedient.

I castrated my 19 year old last week. A year ago, he was as sweet and teachable as a dream. He seemed to learn instantly but then things changed quickly for the worse.

First, I noticed his increasing laziness. He needed more frequent reminders to keep on task.

Next, he began to pick fights with the other ponies at the feeding trough. If he saw someone working with another boy, his hair-trigger temper really flared.

He became pushy and aggressive. All his good manners disappeared. He charged ahead when I tried to lead him. Even grooming became a battle. He struggled in his cross ties. I stared him straight in the eye and defiantly, he would not yield and step over. He kicked at me when I bent to inspect his feet. He threw his weight into me and tried to slam me into walls.

I caught him rubbing his cock against most anything that didn’t move. He tried to hump my grooms and exercise girls – and worst of all, my sister. True, she’s damned hot and parades herself around the stable half naked. Came to the point that he went bonkers when he caught even a whiff of her perfume.

Worst, he became oblivious to any correction. You know, the trainers say when they fight you, make ‘em think they’re going to die for about 3 seconds. I think I could have hit him with a shovel and he wouldn’t have noticed.

I called my vet and the deed was done. The simple shock of it took him down a peg or two and I used his convalescence to renew our bond. I reinforced his good manners while the testosterone gradually vanished from his system. My sister came for a visit a couple of days later and he didn’t even notice her.

Even the nicest of boys can succumb to testosterone poisoning. Even a 20 year old can impregnate a girl. Geld him now!

I didn’t geld my ponyboy until I’d had him for 4 years. He had gotten to the point where he wanted to screw anything or anyone that looked even vaguely female. He was simply too hard to handle. Even being around him was a little scary. It’s been a little over a year now and he’s the biggest, sweetest baby you’ve ever seen, great attitude, but I didn’t see much change at all for the first 6 months.

The pushiness and acting studdy may be him trying to assert his dominance, not just his sexual urges. My ponies seem to go through a nippy - pushy period around the same age and with a little firm, consistent corrective action, I quickly reminded them that I was still boss.

Some friends brought me a six foot five boy on a Wednesday. He had been gelded two days before on Monday. He was still pretty sore but still believed that he was the stud king of the world. I dressed or rather undressed into my skimpiest bikini, saddled him, and took him out for a ride. I warned him that "you had better not even glance at any of the ladies, buster.” I trotted him up to our local girls’ school to display him for the students. After 45 minutes of working him closely with my reins and spurs and snapping his penis with my whip whenever he needed it, he was more than happy to be a gelding and showed not one bit of interest in the gawking girls despite their sleek legs and bare midriffs. I soon realized that my new boy had an overpowering need to establish his dominance. He seemed oblivious to any corrective action. Suddenly, he tried to slam me into walls and would head butt me as quick as I turned my back, often within seconds of my correcting him with several sharp smacks with a riding crop. I'm sure there are stronger measures I could take to establish my authority but they go beyond my comfort zone. My greatest interest was and is that he becomes a good harness pony. He is a beautifully colored and conformed boy, very intelligent and holds to his gaits effortlessly. Had he stayed tractable as he matured, I may have bred him. I just didn't want to cope with his aggressiveness; I've had enough bones broken already.

Now, a week after castrating him, he is already a joy to be around. I am curious, though, to learn what those more experienced would do with a boy like this if they really wanted to keep him intact. Most of what I've seen and heard is nothing I would want to attempt.

What everyone writes is true, but everything depends on the equestrienne and her boy. Elite equestriennes somehow still prefer intact males, despite the higher upkeep and extra trouble.

You must learn to manage your boy. You must read him and distinguish willful disobedience from mere playfulness, confusion, or fear. You need unyielding firmness and consistency. He can never doubt your resolve. Even harder, you, yourself can never doubt your resolve.

I've heard of other ladies doing the same sort of thing, parading their new geldings around lots of hot females. I really think it works and I don't take no crap from no ponyboy!

A single sharp slap to the face may be sufficient for minor corrections. A friend of mine had the best trained and disciplined boy I ever saw. His training was meticulous and intense. An exercise girl put him through his paces. The trainer walked behind and jabbed his poor suffering ass with a red-hot poker at the first sign of any hesitation, let alone disobedience.

Eva, remember my first confrontation. I don’t weigh 50 kg. I stood in front of my 120 kg mount. Saddled and bridled, he was a magnificent beast, heavily muscled and buffed. Madison, that sounds rather extreme. The PET’M folks will be after your trainer friend. The objective is obedience, not fear. If you want to control your boy, you must learn to control yourself. Project confidence – communicate approval or disapproval, not fear or confusion. Humans are a hierarchical species. You are his superior. He hungers for your approval. If he misbehaves, ignore him. Only his prompt and eager obedience will win your attention.

Naturally, we geld boys on our ranch and do it as humanely as possible. Just curious but how much damage can a human testicle tolerate? Once it’s off, I’ve tried squeezing it as hard as I can to see if I could make it pop. The only way I’ve succeeded is to stomp on it with the heel of my boot.

Three main methods. The knife is traditional but you have bleeding and a risk of infection. The elastrator constricts the scrotum with a rubber band and the balls just drop off – no bleeding but the smell of his decaying flesh is quite revolting. The burdizzo is like a giant pliers. Every girl should have one. It crushes the testicles’ blood supply in the scrotum and the dead balls are reabsorbed into the body – no bleeding –no smell. Personally, I prefer a sharp knife.

Secure restraint is necessary for both the gelding knife or the elastrator methods. A horse whip works well as does a crop, but a cattle prod or stun gun is even better. Neither leaves a mark and you needn’t tire yourself. The batteries do all the work. The unsuspecting male has no clue that his restraints mean it will be his last day as a stud.

Males simply don’t feel pain like we do – one consequence of testosterone poisoning. It’s been proven scientifically. We get a new shipment of boys in the corral. The girls round ‘em up and castrate ‘em with nothing at all. They may scream and moan a bit. Tears may run down their sad little faces. You might think it’s quite traumatic but they really get over it very quickly.

My vet uses a sedative – dormosedan. Then she numbs the bag and just does the deed with him standing, secured in his cross-ties.

I want to race my ponyboy stallion and I've been told that they want the ponies "proud-cut" at the track. Supposedly makes them more competitive and more eager to win. I must confess, though, that he has been looking at me strangely and has been getting very horny lately. Should he be proud cut? Also, I want to geld him myself so that he learns more respect for me. I have read in books that you can geld them standing up or lying down. Which is best?

Proud cutting is where a part of the pony's testicle tubes are left behind. Makes them a bit more spirited than normal geldings but they can also be a handful, like having a stallion but without the balls. Don’t recommend doing it yourself. Give me a nice quiet gelding any day.

Round here, they seem to lay them down mostly. I did hear of one vet who did it with the ponyboy standing. I’ll ask my vet about it and see what she says. If you want to do it yourself, have a vet there to help out.

When you open the scrotum with the ponyboy standing, the little buggers try to climb up into his body and it’s hard to get the entire gland. Leave even a fragment behind by accident and he’ll be sterile but have enough hormone to support his studdy behaviors. My vet always shows me the testicles after she’s taken them to prove she’s taken the whole thing. It’s easier if the boy is tied securely down and then you needn’t bother with anesthesia, which makes the operation cheaper.

We do it standing. I’ve seen much more swelling and discomfort when they lay them down. When you do them standing, they only have to have to rest in their stalls for 1 to 2 days...then hand walk for 3 days...then back to training. Less swelling and fewer infections.

We get a corral full of unbroken boys every so often. No time for sedation or locals, it’s over so fast. Me and the girls rope ‘em and choke ‘em. Usually work in pairs. Rope him and pull him down off his feet. One girl kneels on his throat. She flips a lasso over his ankle and yanks his leg clear up to his neck. Her partner cuts him and then they turn him loose. See one, do one, teach one. We auction ‘em off the same day. Beth and I can do twenty in an hour. Saw a girl do one all by her lonesome, just a crazy wrangler showing off. Wouldn’t recommend it though – it’s best and safest to work in pairs.

My sixteen year old daughter is no elite equestrienne and her younger sister may ride him too. She calls him Lucky Star. He is very sweet but I doubt he’s what you would call elite. He does seem to have an eye for the ladies and at times it’s hard to get his attention, but I really thought I might delay gelding him.

Quite simply, all studly behaviors are unacceptable. None is ‘cute.’ For your sake and for his own sake geld him now. You’ll spend weeks beating those defects out of him, if you let them emerge.

Now that’s a really terrible idea. Best way to give him an inflated opinion of himself. Just get it over with and geld him. Look in his eyes, when those fat balls drop into your palm and he’ll know forever who the master is and who the dumb beast.

Due to the fly problem, it’s best to wait until first frost. However, if you lack the facilities to keep him quiet and under control, I’d do it now. Just keep him as clean as possible –especially after exercise.

Flies are a problem in the summer. And hygiene is a greater challenge in hot weather. Dr. Prescott, though, says exercise is critical. Cold water helps. Get him out of his stall and moving.

Well, my trainer says testosterone actually makes the growth plates close sooner. If you geld him, he may grow more slowly but you won’t lose any height in the end. You may lose muscle mass, though, and his bones may lose calcium. She also says it’s best if you castrate them without any anesthesia.

That’s why elite equestriennes prefer intact males. More difficult –yes – but also more muscle mass, strength, and endurance. Geldings get a skinny neck, poorly-built chest and back, and redistributed body fat. Impossible to keep them nicely buffed. I just don’t like the look.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I have learned a few things. I really didn’t know about the bones closing early on a stallion. The only reason I was thinking of trying to keep him a stud is because of my sister. But there are a lot of good studs out there, and since my daughter doesn't have the money for a trainer or the knowledge to train him herself, I think Lucky Star’s "boys" will have to go! LOL Thanks, for your help.

Why in the world does your sister want to have sex with him? My vet gave me this advice – if a boy’s docile and well behaved – between 18 and 24 years. If the hormones take over and he starts fighting you and tries to mount girls – just do it.

Well, it's done! I really, really hated to geld my daughter's pony. Vet used the burdizzo. I’d never seen it done and it was gross. The vet came out again yesterday. Today, I went out to walk him like the vet said and the little guy is still so full of himself. How long will it take before he realizes he's a gelding?

I gelded one boy at 20. He forgot his studdy behaviors immediately. Now, he has the best attitude you could desire and looks great – strong haunches, broad shoulders, and good muscle mass. I gelded another at 28 and I’m still giving him a lot of whip to curb his bad behaviors, though after a year, he’s finally starting to calm down and learn his place.

I went to the barn today and his scrotum was all swollen up. I've been walking him twice a day like the vet suggested. Is this expected? I have nothing to go by so I don't know. Excuse me if this sounds offensive but it looks like his balls grew back farther in his sac, closer to his anus. I know they didn’t, but what’s up with this. The vet closes early on Saturday so I couldn't call to her today. Is this normal or should I call the vet Monday? He doesn't act like it hurts him much. I turned him loose in the paddock and he just looked pretty sorry for himself.

Emily, he probably just needs more exercise, when I had my old boy gelded a couple of years ago, the vet said do not let him get swollen any larger than an oil can. He needed a lot of work to keep the swelling down. Try to imagine seeing if the swelling was bigger than an oil can, believe you me it is not easy comparing, lol. I had to lunge him and run him several times a day, because he swelled quite a bit. After a couple of days you will start to notice the swelling going down. I never had any problem with stallion behavior, they were removed before he ever knew he had been a stud and he was born with a laid-back attitude in the first place, so I think that helped. Just keep him exercised, whipped and worked! Good Luck!

We use traps to keep down the number of flies in warm weather. A fan can also help keep the flies away. Exercise is very important. Keeps his mind off his missing bits and keeps the blood circulating. We like to harness the new gelding with a boy who loves to run. A strong partner and my whip keep him moving and I hose down the surgery site each time he runs. Cold water reduces the swelling.

I just got back from the barn. Lucky Star was badly swollen still in the morning. I put him on the hot walker for about an hour. He fought me and even tried to talk! After everyone left, we had some quiet time without distractions. I washed him and led him around and he was a very good boy. None of his trying to butt me with his head or to run ahead of me. Finally, the exercise made the swelling go down.

I think the old boy may make a good little harness pony when he gets older. Now I can start some good training. I trained his half brother too. When I got him, he was already a gelding. It’s a kick to raise them and watch them learn.

A boy down on all fours with his balls hanging between his legs reminds me of a colt waiting to be gelded. I love the feel of warm balls in my palm after they have been cut free. Boys are so full of themselves, so proud of their 5 or 6 inch woodies. The ones with 8 or 9 inches are absolutely thrilled with themselves. Ha ha ha. They should see my 4-legged stallions. Up to me, I’d take their balls and their shafts too. Then sew ‘em up clean and smooth.
